What is a Data Warehouse

A data warehouse is a database consolidating data from multiple business systems. The information in this database is organised so it can be easily interrogated to make informed business decisions.

Typically, a business will have an accounts system, core business system (for Order Processing/Manufacturing/Servicing etc) and a marketing/prospecting system.  Many businesses have far more.

Each of these systems were introduced to meet a specific business requirement, in many cases they were always seen as separate systems.  As the years go by the executive management realise that the data in these systems is of great value. However, as they are separate systems, the only way they can obtain an overall picture is by creating spreadsheets and pasting data from the different systems into them.  This becomes a very time-consuming process, often consuming valuable executive time that could be more effectively used for other key purposes.

With a data warehouse the information is updated automatically. The executive management can view reports, or dashboards in real time.  Dashboards present the data in a visual and interactive format, clicking on widgets in the dashboard re-analyse the data in a fresh way, allowing you to ‘feel’ the data in real time.

Data is one of you most valuable business assets, are you making the most of it.
